Algorithmic Control I

A BCM112 and BCM113 content crossover how exciting!

In this weeks lecture we discussed the concept of Algorithmic and Content Control (in other words, copyright).

What is Copyright?…

“Copyright is the right to copy.”

This means that original creators of products and anyone they give authorisation to are the only ones with the exclusive right to reproduce the work. There is an Australian law in place to protect people from copyright called Copyright Law.  The Copyright law in Australia  defines as the legally enforceable rights of creators of creative and artistic works under Australian law. The scope of copyright in Australia is defined in the Copyright Act 1968.

The content industry argues that a world without intellectual property would we be a world without any new ideas. The industry’s aim is control over content, ideas and all possible uses of information. There is no scarcity inherent in digital content, and no cost to copying it. In saying this, every digital operation involves copying. Every time you go online your computer copies everything you encounter.

After all the internet is a copy machine, remember??

  1. Hi Sophie, I like your explanation of Copyright, it shows that you have a really good understanding of the topic! I like the gif you made as well, it’s interesting how that is also automatically copyrighted. For my own post about this topic, I talked about how the public domain protects you from copyright, using an audio from soundcloud explaining an example of my own- where I created a ceramic tray using a picture from Pinterest as my idea, and then reworking it into my own creation.

  2. Hey Sophie! I do BCM113 as well so I love how this content covers a bit of the legal side to copyright as well, it really supports your discussion. Using a gif as your remediation that is copyrighted as well really enhances your point about how everything on the internet really is copyrighted.
