The Internet Paradigm

In this weeks bcm112 lecture, we discussed the conceptulization the Internet Paradigm.

What does this mean exactly?

Well …

Firstly, the paradigm is ‘a distinct set of concepts or thought patterns, include theories, research methods, and standards for what constitutes legitimate contributions to a field’. The idea of a paradigm shift is ‘the successive transition from one paradigm to another via revolution is the usual development pattern of mature science’.

Over the last couple of decades the internet has experienced multiple paradigm shifts.

The media is one of the aspects to come out of this internet paradigm shift. This can be separated into two different groups; monologic media and dialogic media. The functions of these groups are largely differentiated.

So, what’s the difference?

Monologic media is heavily biased and can quite often be manipulating the public into what they want their audiences to hear.

Dialogic media is more communication centred allowing users to be involved and leave their own thoughts and opinions.

In todays internet paradigm, I believe we are living in a dialogic world. However, we are still seeing parts of monologic media (limits on content creation). Both media sources have their pros and cons and when used properly benefit the media in todays society.
